Ms. Hillary Stone took a few minutes to chat with us about her Cosmetology career and how she started on her exciting teaching journey. She is an important part of our Cosmetology Program and we are so lucky to have her!  Ms. Hillary moved to North County San Diego, all the way from Florida because her dream was to teach in a beauty school in Southern California. Check out the interview below to learn more about this wonderful teacher.

PIC: What license do you have, and how long have you been licensed?

Ms. Hillary: I have a Cosmetology License and I have been licensed for a little over 15 years.

PIC: How and why did you choose a career in the beauty industry?

Ms. Hillary: This career chose me! I wanted to make people look completely different for theatrical reasons. I have always been interested in movies and theater looks so I decided to make it my career!

PIC: What was your beauty school experience like?

Ms. Hillary: Beauty school was one of the hardest things I ever did, but clearly the best thing I ever did. I grew so much as a person in such a short amount of time, it was unbelievable.

PIC: What subject was hard for you in beauty school?

Ms. Hillary: Haircutting was my biggest challenge because it was just completely logical, and I wasn’t. Now I absolutely love cutting hair. Once it clicked, I felt like I could conquer the world!

PIC: Can you tell me more about your beauty school experience. Did you ever make a mistake on a client?

Ms. Hillary: I didn’t make a mistake on a client until after I graduated! I always had teachers there to guide me and help me. School was my safe zone.

PIC: Tell me about a teacher who has inspired you.

Ms. Hillary: As a teacher, I’ve worked with tons of teachers. My colleagues have all been inspirational in their own way, but one, in particular, was such an inspiration. He built an entirely new career dedicated to teaching and guiding students nationally.

PIC: Tell me about your professional journey after beauty school and before you started teaching?

Ms. Hillary: Before I became a teacher, I was a hairdresser in Florida at Walt Disney World. I helped princesses play dress up all day. I was a wig stylist and makeup artist for characters and it was a blast!

PIC: What inspired you to teach?

Ms. Hillary: I’ve always loved education, I just wanted to be part of it. I love passing along my training to future hairdressers to keep the industry going.

PIC: What classes do you teach at PIC?

Ms. Hillary: I teach MainTheory, Clinic Floor, and the Master Stylist Classes.

PIC: Tell me about your teaching style. What are your classes like?

Ms. Hillary: My classes are very interactive. I do a part lecture and part class participation. I’m very understanding of different learning types so I’ve altered my teaching style to accommodate all types of learners.

PIC: Have you watched students come through this school and be successful?

Hillary: I’ve had hundreds of students at this point. It is awesome to watch them grow as hair dressers and professionals.

PIC: Tell me more about success. What is your definition of success in the beauty industry?

Ms. Hillary: Success in the beauty industry means living comfortably and having a perfect work/life balance.

PIC: What is your number one piece of advice for someone considering going to beauty school?

Ms. Hillary: Go all-in with 100% understanding that you will grow so much!

PIC: What type of advanced classes do you attend to keep up with the beauty industry trends?

Ms. Hillary: I love taking classes on barber skills.

PIC: Do you ever have students that struggle to learn a new technique?

Ms. Hillary: Absolutely! The struggle is half the battle. The light is the goal. Once I see the struggle disappear and the light turn on, I know I’ve done my job.

PIC: When you work on the clinic floor, what do you do when one of your students makes a mistake on a client?

Ms. Hillary: Personally, I try to fix what I can. The client usually never knows and the student learns more from the mistake than they do when they do a perfect client. It is usually a win-win for everyone.

PIC: Tell us a little bit about what you do outside of school. What are your favorite things to do during your time off?

Ms. Hillary: Haha I try to sleep on my time off.

PIC: Where would you go on your dream vacation?

Ms. Hillary: Italy!

PIC: If you could only take one beauty product on that vacation, what would it be?

Ms. Hillary: Eyebrow Pomade

PIC: What is one thing about you that most students probably do not know?

Ms. Hillary: I am a very introverted person.

PIC: Thank you, Ms. Hillary, for everything you do and for being an inspiration to our students! It was a pleasure getting to know you more.
